Sequoia Baptist ChurchSequoia Baptist Church is a church body devoted to preaching the Word of God and standing for the truth it proclaims.
About the Church
The history of Sequoia Baptist Church begins on July 3rd, 1963, where the First Baptist Church of Auburn, Washington had hopes of establishing a church in Kent. Three families came together and started a Kent Mission in an old abandoned church building at the corner of 5th & Gowe Street. The Mission began to gain new members but in the fall of 1963, the Mission hit a rough patch in the road. The First Baptist Church of Auburn disbanded and the first pastor of the Mission resigned. The Auburn church presented their entire church furnishings as a gift to the Kent Mission, however, the Mission had now lost its sponsor. They looked to Emmanuel Baptist Church, but at that time, the church was unable to sponsor the Mission. On September 15, 1963, the Kent Mission approached Calvary Baptist Church's Mission Committee and asked if one of their members would serve as their pastor and sponsor them. They agreed. The Mission had a sponsor again.
On March 4, 1964, a member of the Mission Committee of Calvary Baptist church was given the duty to find a possible building site for the Kent Mission. After many conversations with realtors and re-division of plots, the site was determined - the church would be placed on the new street off Kent Kangley next to the new Sequoia Junior High School. On Sunday, August 20, 1967, Sequoia Baptist Church held its Ground Breaking service. The church has grown over the years and has had eleven different pastors over the course of its history, with the current pastor shepherding the church since 1993.
About the Pastor
Brian Duffer has served as the pastor of Sequoia Baptist Church since 1993, when he first came as our interim. After holding that position for a year, the church decided to extend a call to him to be the full-time, permanent pastor of the church. Prior to coming as our pastor, Brian was the director of bands at Thomas Jefferson Senior High in the Federal Way School District in Washington. Brian graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1984 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in music and education. He also earned the Master of Divinity degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He married Tina Vessey in 1995.
